Marketing and Event Development Internships
The Tahoe-Baikal Institute is seeking two motivated interns to help organize and execute a variety of fundraising events during the summer of 2011.
Background: The Tahoe-Baikal Institute is a small non-profit organization that promotes watershed protection through international exchanges and other educational programs. Although we focus our work at Lake Tahoe and Lake Baikal in Russia, the lessons that we aim to teach during our programs are applicable to all watersheds around the world.
In the summer of 2011, TBI will be putting on several fundraising events. The first of these will be our Annual Gala and Silent Auction, which will take place on the evening of Friday, July 1st, 2011 at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Lakeview Lodge. Additional events may include house parties, exclusive dinner events, direct mailings, donor appreciation receptions, and phone-drives.
Each position will typically be between 5 and 20 hours per week (flexible), but both interns should expect to work a minimum of 30 hours during the week leading up to the July 1st event.
Position 1
Development/Event Planning Internship (Silent Auction focus)
The primary responsibility of this internship will be to coordinate TBI’s second annual Silent Auction, which will be held during our Annual Gala on July 1, 2011.
Specific tasks include:
- Soliciting Donations of Auction Items
- Collecting and organizing auctions items
- Preparing displays for each item, overall auction pamphlets, and advance info about the items which will be sent to guests with their tickets and posted on the TBI website
- Set up of the auction
- Organizing and tracking winning bids and payments
- Assist with outreach, coordination, and execution of one to two additional fundraising events during July and August (details of these events to be determined—intern will have the opportunity to be involved from the early idea stage through execution)
Position 2
Marketing/Event Planning Internship (Event Logistics Focus)
This position will focus on coordination of event logistics, as well as advertizing and outreach about the Gala event.
Specific tasks will include:
- Development of outreach and marketing for Annual Gala
- Assisting with the design, printing, and mailing of invitations
- Collection of and tracking of RSVPs
- Correspondence with the event venue staff
- Solicitation of donations and event sponsorships
- Coordination with event speakers, special guests (awardees), band, and others.
- Assist with outreach, coordination, and execution of one to two additional fundraising events during July and August (details of these events to be determined—intern will have the opportunity to be involved from the early idea stage through execution)
Ideal candidates will demonstrate the following characteristics:
- Outgoing personality;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to work independently and take creative initiative on projects;
- Strong sense of professionalism;
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint; Familiarity with desktop publishing programs such as MS Publisher or Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) also desirable.
Each position is five to ten hours per week minimum, with flexible hours, but both interns should expect to work a minimum of 30 hours during the week leading up to the July 1st event.
Interns will work out of the TBI office in South Lake Tahoe.

Internship opportunities include:
- Event Marketing: Organize and promote fundraising and educational events, including House Parties, Major Donor events and Annual Friendraiser.
- Silent Auction: Help solicit donations, organize items, and handle event logistics for a silent auction that will be held at our Annual Friendraiser on July 2nd, 2010.
- Donor Outreach: Create communication pieces to donors to increase knowledge of Tahoe- Baikal Institute programs and accomplishments through Direct Mail, Email, invitations, special events or brochures.
- General Support: Assist the Development Director in other general duties such as making phone calls, database organization, representing the Tahoe-Baikal Institute at meetings or community events, and other office duties.
Intern(s) may work on one or more of the aforementioned activities depending on experience and interest, as well as current TBI priorities.
